Organizing OU: IEEE IES WA Chapter Speaker: Dr Arash Vahidnia, RMIT University, Melbourne Abstract: Over the last two decades, the penetration level of the power electronic converter (PEC) interfaced renewable energy sources rapidly increased to address the global warming and climate change concerns. While these changes had paved the way for greener energy supply, they have significantly affected the frequency and voltage control and the stability of power systems. This presentation will explore the advanced monitoring and control approaches to address the increasing challenges of integrating renewable energy resources into the power systems and to assist in providing secure, stable and reliable power grids with high penetration of renewable energy sources. Bio: Dr Arash Vahidnia is currently a Senior Lecture and Program Manager in the School of Engineering at RMIT University. He received his PhD in power engineering from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and was a Research Fellow within the power engineering group at QUT before joining RMIT. He is also a Senior member of IEEE and has several years of industry experience working at power consultancy and utility firms. His research interests include system stability, wide-are control, microgrids, power and energy system planning, integration of renewable energy sources and control of renewable rich power systems.
