Ten men stand in a circle. One clay jar. Ten stones — nine plain, one black. Whoever pulls the black stone will be beaten to death in the next few minutes, by the hands of the nine men standing next to him. None of them did anything wrong today. This is punishment for what their whole unit did together. This is decimation — the most famous Roman military punishment, and also one of the rarest. Most soldiers who broke the rules never faced anything this dramatic. What they faced instead was a vast, carefully graded system of discipline, running from a demotion to barley rations all the way up to a punishment some men reportedly feared more than death itself. This connects directly to our last two videos — on a soldier's last day before retirement, and on what happened if he never made it that far. Watch those next if you haven't already.
