We begin with the formation of calculus and mineralization of dental plaque, including the role of microorganisms, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), followed by the theories of calculus mineralization such as the booster mechanism, epitactic concept, inhibition theory, transformation theory, bacterial theory and enzymatic theory. We then discuss the composition of dental calculus, including its inorganic and organic components, followed by the classification into supragingival and subgingival calculus. The lecture further covers the clinical characteristics of supragingival and subgingival calculus, including their location, color, consistency, hardness and attachment to the tooth surface. We also discuss the viability of microorganisms within calculus, methods of calculus detection, including visual and tactile examination, and different approaches to calculus removal, including mechanical debridement, vector systems and laser ablation. Finally, we discuss the clinical significance of dental calculus and understand why calculus is important in periodontal disease and periodontal therapy.
