What we treasure shapes how we see the world. And how we see the world shapes the kind of world we help create.
In Matthew 6:19–24, Jesus offers a familiar teaching: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." But what if this passage isn't simply about money or material possessions? What if it's about something deeper—how our desires, attachments, and everyday habits shape our perception of reality?
In this homily from Glendale Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, we explore the relationship between wealth, attention, spiritual awakening, and the practice of seeing clearly.
Drawing on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, the wisdom of Ram Dass and Hari Dass Baba, and the Hindu practice of "neti neti" (not this, not this), we consider how the stories we tell about ourselves can cloud our vision—and how spiritual practice can help us recognize our interconnectedness and the inherent worth of every person.
We explore how the pursuit of wealth, power, and gratification can leave us trapped in cycles of craving and dissatisfaction, and how cultivating different treasures—compassion, justice, peace, wisdom, and love—can transform both our inner lives and the world around us.
Ultimately, Jesus' invitation isn't to reject money, but to put wealth in service of life rather than putting our lives in service of wealth.
