POV: Your Life at Every Level of a Space Marine Librarian (Warhammer 40K) Level one, Aspirant. The room smells of copper and cold stone, and the basin of ice water on the table in front of you has been there long enough that the chill has spread into the floor beneath your feet. You are not here because you volunteered. You are here because something inside you was found, the way a fault line is found — not by looking for it, but by the ground moving without permission. The other aspirants are somewhere above you, running drills in the training yard, shouting at each other in the way boys shout when they are afraid and covering it well. You watched them from a corridor window an hour ago. You are not with them anymore.
