The global debt mountain has crossed a staggering $365 trillion, after more than $10 trillion was added in just the first half of 2026. According to the latest figures cited from the Institute of International Finance, global debt reached approximately $365.5 trillion by the end of June 2026. But the bigger question is not just how large the debt number has become. Rising bond yields, higher borrowing costs, fiscal deficits and refinancing requirements are creating pressure on governments, companies and households across the world. Emerging markets contributed around $6.5 trillion to the increase, pushing their combined debt above $110 trillion. China was the biggest contributor, with its total debt increasing by more than $4.8 trillion to approximately $72.5 trillion. The situation also matters for the United States, China, India and global financial markets. The IIF has warned about the possibility of a vicious cycle in which higher interest costs increase fiscal deficits, forcing governments to borrow even more. In this video, Amber Zaidi examines the $365 trillion global debt mountain, why global borrowing is accelerating, what China's rising debt means, how America's borrowing costs are changing, and what this could mean for India, the rupee, inflation, interest rates, bond markets and global economic stability. We also examine the increasingly important issue of refinancing risk: governments and companies must continuously roll over existing debt, and higher long-term borrowing costs can make that process increasingly expensive. The OECD estimates governments and companies will borrow around $29 trillion from bond markets in 2026, with a large share going toward refinancing existing debt. Is the world heading toward another major financial crisis — or can economic growth continue to absorb the enormous debt burden?
