Tonight, drift off to sleep while following the entire history of the Mongol Empire, from the windswept grasslands of Mongolia to the creation of the largest contiguous land empire the world has ever known. This long-form history documentary for sleep begins on the Mongolian steppe, where a boy named Temujin survived abandonment, poverty and bitter rivalries before uniting the tribes of Mongolia and becoming Genghis Khan. From there, we'll slowly follow the rise of an empire that eventually stretched across enormous parts of China, Central Asia, Persia, Russia and Eastern Europe. Along the way, you'll hear about Mongol horse archers and their extraordinary mobility, the unification of the steppe, the armies of Genghis Khan, the Silk Road, Karakorum, the invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire, the Mongol advance into Europe, the fall of Baghdad, Kublai Khan and the Yuan dynasty, the attempted invasions of Japan, and the eventual division of the empire into the Golden Horde, Ilkhanate, Chagatai Khanate and Yuan dynasty. But the Mongol story was about more than conquest. We'll also explore everyday life on the steppe, Mongol horses and gers, Tengrism, the role of women, religious tolerance, the yam postal network, international trade and the period sometimes called the Pax Mongolica, when merchants, diplomats, technologies and ideas travelled across Eurasia with extraordinary freedom. Finally, we'll follow the empire's gradual fragmentation and explore how the descendants of its conquerors adapted to the civilizations they governed, becoming rulers of China, Persia, Central Asia and the western steppe before their khanates slowly disappeared or transformed into something new. This is a calm, unhurried history documentary made to fall asleep to. There is no need to remember every khan, battle or date. Lower the volume, get comfortable, close your eyes and simply let the story carry you across the steppe and toward sleep.
