Mike and Angelo S3E6 (1990) - FULL EPISODE

Milton's Visit. Mike's kind sweet helpful cousin has flown in from America, but he's not keen on the house, the food, or the fact that there are only four channels on British telly. Maybe a nice slideshow will cheer him up, or perhaps he'll be interested in his Great-Grandfather's silver pocket watch, the family heirloom that's been passed on to Rita. This episode was originally broadcast on Wednesday, 19th December, 1990. By far the standout scene of this one for me is the nightmarishly surreal trial. There are layers upon layers of Angelos, which all had to be done individually in front of a blue screen and (I think) composited in real time. I don't know whether the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland vibe is deliberate, but I definitely like it. It's a real tour-de-force of early 90s visual effects, and memorable enough for Tim Whitnall to bring it up when interviewed for the brilliant Jack's Throwback Attack podcast:    • Jack's Throwback Attack Podcast - S3 E4 - ...   (The whole thing is very much worth listening to if you haven't already, by the way, as is Jack's chat with writer Lee Pressman:    • Jack's Throwback Attack Podcast - S5 E3 - ...   ) Aside from that, the character of Milton being so dislikeably disagreeable is never truly explained, and quite why he takes so strongly against Angelo to the point of trying to ruin his life after being given such an enthusiastic welcome is an even bigger mystery. Going full nuclear on the watch, though, knowing how much it meant to all of the household, is unfathomably over the top. Teenage boys will be teenage boys, I suppose. At least Angelo's powers extend further than we realised and reduce him to the gibbering wreck we were all hoping for. The excellent guest star, I should mention, is Nitzan Sharron, who viewers may remember as the character of Gerald in episodes of Grange Hill from the latter half of the 90s. He's got a handful of other screen credits including The Bill and Holby City, and it looks like he's gone on to have a more than decent stage career, too. Good for him. Keep an eye out for plenty of CITV continuity at the beginning and end featuring Jeanne Downs, Scally, and Motormouth's Gaby Roslin decorating the Christmas tree and chatting about that year's upcoming all-star panto spectacular. There are also two full ad breaks (including one of the most memorable singalongs ever) to get you in the retro mood as we come out of Hot Dog at the start and finish by going into (ahem) Rolf's Cartoon Club. Something always has to ruin it, doesn't it?
