19841201 Coventry City 1:1 Tottenham Hotspur - Canon Football League First Division on Saturday 1st December 1984 at Highfield Road Stadium. K.O. 3pm. Attendance: 14,474.
About the Recording
This match was preserved on a tape that remained in my attic for more than 40 years, alongside recordings of other matches played at Highfield Road between 1981 and 2005. Coventry City had a direct feed to the video room, allowing us to record matches on our machines and show the footage on televisions around the ground.
Because Coventry City faced significant financial difficulties throughout much of the 1980s, the club could not afford new tapes. I therefore extracted the best moments from this match in 1984 before the master tapes were reused.
The team sheet appears in the video and is also available at skybluearchive.com.
Match Report
From the opening whistle, this promised to be a lively contest. Tottenham made the stronger start, attacking towards Coventry’s West Stand. Glenn Hoddle chipped goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic, but Sky Blues defender Kirk Stephens headed the ball away from an open goal. Cyrille Regis went close but was ruled offside in the first half. Micky Gynn and Dave Bennett made several threatening runs at the Tottenham defence, but in the 34th minute Tottenham took the lead when Mark Falco scored with a left-footed shot from inside Coventry’s penalty area.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Sky Blues raising the tempo. Coventry goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic made some impressive saves keeping the Sky Blues in the game. Coventry came so close to an equaliser when defender Brian Kilcline nearly scored from a free kick clipping off the outside of the post. Ian Butterworth was assigned to mark Hoddle in the 2nd half and largely kept him quiet.
The Sky Blues persistence were rewarded when Terry Gibson found Cyrille Regis, whose shot just inside the post earned Coventry a well-deserved point in the 89th minute.
Coventry still had to remain alert. In injury time, Tottenham nearly snatched a winner when a late effort struck the post before the Sky Blues cleared the danger. The closing stages were delayed further when Tottenham supporters entered the pitch.

Ian Butterworth came on as sub for Ken Hibbitt in the 46th Minute, while Tottenham’s Tony Galvin was replaced by Gary Mabbutt in the 69th minute.
