He rebuilt a Dell repair centre over a weekend and every metric went the wrong way. What James Morgan learned about people, resilience and designing a life first.
In this episode of The Resilient Edge, Charlie Peschardt speaks with James Morgan - engineer turned lean transformation specialist and founder of the consultancy Amselina. Over 25 years James has coached teams from start-ups to Fortune 500s, working with organisations including the NHS, the RNLI, the Institute of Cancer Research, Ford, Rolls-Royce, IBM and Apple to deliver growth and savings strategies worth more than €100 million. His journey took him from a career-fair rejection (rescued by his time working in kitchens), to the wild world of consultancy, and through the hardest year of his life, which changed how he works and what he works for.
In this conversation we get into:
• Why a CV line about cooking in kitchens opened the door to an engineering career
• The Dell laptop overhaul that worked perfectly on paper, failed on the shop floor, and became a global playbook once the team made it their own
• Why leadership means creating an environment where good people can do their best work, not telling them what to do
• The two things organisations get wrong about resilience: fixed ideas of how things should be done, and short-term thinking
• How James designed his business around family time first, and the person who made him stop and do it
From the conversation:
“If I’d thought about it too much, I was never taking that jump.” * — James*
“There’s no superheroes in this game. You really need to be involving the people that are doing the work.” * — James*
“Good leadership is really providing an environment in which good people can do their best work, not telling people what to do.” * — James*
“Resilience is your ability to look for the good in that situation and recognise that it’s adding significant value to you and your life.” * — James*
“The opportunity of building your own business is that you can say: what do I want my life to look like? And then I want the business to be a part of that.” * — James*

If this conversation resonated, it's probably because you're navigating something similar - pressure, complexity, a decision that matters, or a transition you haven't quite figured out yet.
The Resilient Edge is hosted by Charlie Peschardt. I work with individuals, leaders, founders, and organisations who need clarity in complexity, order from uncertainty, and direction under pressure. If that's you - or someone you know - I'd love to talk.
