Baylor Hiring Former BYU Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill As Head Coach to Spite Michigan Would ROCK

Any chatter linking Jay Hill to the prospective head coaching vacancy at Baylor makes absolute metric and structural sense. If Waco is looking to overhaul an operational profile that has stagnated in the middle tier of the Big 12, targeting the former Weber State head coach and BYU defensive architect—who moved on to coordinate Michigan's defense—is a textbook blueprint play. The analytical case for Hill begins with his proven head coaching baseline. Over nine seasons at Weber State, Hill amassed a 68–39 record, captured four consecutive Big Sky titles, and built a dominant FCS power through strict trench development and special teams value. He isn't a speculative coordinator candidate; he has established organizational infrastructure, player evaluation standards, and game-management logic as a proven CEO. When he transitioned to the Big 12 as BYU's associate head coach and defensive coordinator, his efficiency metrics completely transformed the Cougars' ceiling. Under Hill, BYU's defense mutated from a bottom-tier unit into a top-20 national powerhouse in scoring defense, EPA per dropback, and takeaway margin. In 2024, his secondary led the entire nation with 22 interceptions, relying on heavy horizontal boundary traps and situational 3rd-down suppression. He understands the exact down-to-down defensive success rates required to win in the modern Big 12. From a recruiting and structural standpoint, Hill brings massive regional ties across Texas and the West Coast, alongside deep familiarity with the conference's roster-building landscape. If Baylor wants to stop bleeding early-down efficiency and re-establish a hard-nosed, trench-first defensive floor, Jay Hill represents the exact type of high-floor, low-variance head coaching candidate that stabilizes a program immediately.
