His name was Thiess, and this was Livonia, in 1692. He said he was one of the hounds of God. Three times a year he and the others went down to Hell with iron rods to fight the witches, and win back the grain and the cattle they had stolen. The court had him flogged. The sources disagree about whether it was ten lashes or twenty. They agree that he never took back a word of it. Most of the werewolf rules people know are much younger than Thiess. The silver bullet became the rule with The Wolf Man, in 1941. The full moon did not turn anyone into anything on screen until the sequel, two years later. The movies gave the werewolf its rules. The old records gave it something harder to put down: a man who was sure he was on the right side. 🎧 Best with headphones, or quiet on a speaker across the room.
