A mother went searching for her missing teenage daughter. Days later, she was found murdered in a Spokane alley. Almost forty years passed before an ordinary letter helped police make an arrest.
On November 4, 1986, thirty-two-year-old Mary Ann Turner was found strangled in Spokane, Washington. She had been desperately searching for her sixteen-year-old daughter, Manieka, who had run away from home.
For nearly four decades, Mary Ann's murder remained unsolved.
Then, in October 2026, Spokane police announced a shocking breakthrough.
Investigators used modern DNA technology, evidence preserved from Mary Ann's body, and a carefully planned letter about a stolen vehicle to obtain a new genetic comparison.
The letter was returned in a sealed envelope. According to court records, DNA recovered from that envelope became crucial evidence in the investigation.
On October 21, 2026, police arrested seventy-four-year-old David Tibbett on suspicion of second-degree murder.
But another extraordinary detail emerged.
Tibbett's name had reportedly appeared in witness information collected during the original investigation in 1986.
So why did it take almost forty years to make an arrest? What really happened during Mary Ann Turner's final hours? And how did one ordinary envelope become such an important piece of evidence?
In this CrimePulse Stories true crime documentary, we examine Mary Ann Turner's heartbreaking life, her search for her daughter, the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death, the forgotten vehicle clue, the DNA breakthrough, and the arrest that brought this decades-old murder investigation back into the headlines.
David Tibbett is accused of murder and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing.
