Marine iguanas have a fascinating physiologic adaptation that allows them to survive while feeding in a high-salt marine environment. This mechanism is also a memorable comparative physiology concept for veterinary licensing examinations.
In this video, we review how marine iguanas eliminate excess electrolytes and why they perform their characteristic “salt sneeze.”
🦎 In this video:
Why marine iguanas ingest large amounts of salt while feeding on marine algae
How specialized cranial salt glands help maintain electrolyte balance
Removal of excess sodium and potassium from the bloodstream
How concentrated salt secretions travel toward the nasal passages
The characteristic salt sneeze
Why marine iguanas may develop a visible white salt crust around the head and nostrils
How this adaptation allows marine iguanas to thrive in a saltwater environment
📚 HIGH-YIELD EXAM PEARL:
Marine iguana + white crust around the nostrils/head → think SALT GLANDS.
🧠 Easy association:
Ocean algae → excess salt → cranial salt glands → nasal excretion → SALT SNEEZE
This is a great example of extrarenal salt excretion and physiologic adaptation to a marine environment.
