The Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda (X.90) is among the most sublime and foundational hymns in Vedic revelation. It envisions the Supreme Being—the Cosmic Person (Virat Purusha)—as infinite and omnipresent, endowed with thousands of heads, eyes, and feet, permeating the entire manifest creation and yet transcending it. Through the metaphor of the cosmic sacrifice (Yajna), the hymn reveals the sacred unity connecting the cosmos, nature, living beings, and the transcendent Reality. This discourse provides a foundational introduction to the metaphysical vision and spiritual significance of the Purusha Sukta. The talk is based on the book “Veda Vihangam”. The most sacred books of the Hindu race, the Veda – Ṛk, Sāma, Yajuḥ and Atharva -- are the oldest scriptures of the world, which have come down to us exactly the way these were composed thousands of years ago by the great sages of the prehistoric Indian subcontinent. Over the millennia, these sacred books have shaped Indian religious, social and cultural life, while their footprints are visible in practically every aspect of the Indian way of life. The chant of Gāyatrī, sacred symbol Oṃ, rituals related to birth, death, life and marriage, the growth of geometry, founding of algebra, invention of 0 in mathematics, prosody in poetry, languages, dance, music, drama – all this and many more, with which a Hindu feels inextricably connected, are directly related to the Veda. Consciously or unconsciously every Indian breathes in the Veda and when his life-breath leaves the body, his onward journey too is facilitated by the Veda. This series in Hindi is part of a systematic study of the Vedas. These talks aim at uncovering the deep philosophical truths and practical wisdom contained within our scriptures, guiding seekers toward a life of clarity, devotion, and self-realization. This discourse is part of a dedicated effort by Indian Spiritual Heritage to preserve and share the authentic wisdom of Indian scriptures in their purest form. Our goal is the selfless dissemination of spiritual truth for the benefit of all seekers. These talks were delivered at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math.
