In this episode of Parenthood Unscripted, I’m joined by Jenny Wheeler, pediatric occupational therapist and founder of Wheeler Occupational Therapy, PLLC, for a conversation about sensory needs, picky eating, and supporting our children through everyday challenges. Occupational therapy can address so much more than fine motor skills! Jenny helps us better understand how sensory processing can affect a child’s daily life, what to look for when a child is constantly moving or struggling to regulate, and how to support children who experience sensitivities to sounds, textures, and other sensory experiences. We also talk about navigating picky eating without turning every meal into a battle, why low-pressure exposure matters, and how Jenny’s experience as both a clinician and a mom shapes the way she supports families. One of the biggest reminders from this conversation is that you don’t have to be your child’s parent AND their therapist. You can want the best for your child, advocate for their needs, and ask for support without feeling like you need to have all the answers. In this episode, we discuss: • What pediatric occupational therapy addresses beyond fine motor skills • How sensory processing can impact everyday activities • Understanding sensory-seeking behaviors and movement needs • Supporting children with sensory sensitivities • Approaching picky eating with patience and less pressure • Why honoring your child’s individual needs matters • How parenthood influences the way professionals support families • Giving yourself permission to ask for help and simply be your child’s parent Connect with Jenny Wheeler Jenny Wheeler is a pediatric occupational therapist and founder of Wheeler Occupational Therapy, PLLC.
