Here is a video all about playing and interpreting written conga parts in the Motown style. I recently played the Broadway show Aint' Too Proud for a week and I show you some of these parts. I also explain the way I interpret grooves that are notated in a simple rhythmic form that does not specify particular conga sounds and techniques. The congas I am using are 1980's Gon Bops. Here are the tunes/groove descriptions and Time Stamps 0:00 Introduction 7:44 Runaway Child - Fast Tumbao 12:50 I Want a love I Can See - Rock Cha Cha 16:15 Get Ready - Tumbao/ Dbl.x Rock 21:15 Aint' To Proud to Beg - Motown Tumbao 22:53 If I Could Build My World Around You- Swing Tumbao 24:55 I'm Losing You - Motown Rock 27:43 I Could Never Love Another- Motown Rock 30:41 I Can't Get Next To You - Funk 33:19 War-Funk/Rock 35:16 Ball Of Confusion- Motown Slow Funk 36:38 Superstar- Dbl.X/-1/2X Funk 39:08 Cloud 9- Busy Funk Here are links to my other conga videos if you want to see me explain a bit more of how I play this instrument.
