Indoor Winter Growing Stage 2, and New Kit || Charles Dowding Stage 1 of growing for winter salad leaves and greens is sowing the seeds, in September mostly. Also that's when I took runners from my strawberry plants, although it would've been better done in late August so they had more roots already. This is stage 2 where I'm transplanting seedlings into small crates, lined with a little card and paper. I use two different composts, so that later we can assess their qualities, by how well the plants grow. I keep all these in my unheated greenhouse. It has full light which is especially important in winter, especially since we are 51° north and often cloudy. The second part of this video is about base trays designed to sit under Containerwise module trays. I show here some new kit for the CD60, CD30 and CD15 trays. They sit on shallow bars in the base trays, which hold them at a specific height. This gives two possibilities. One is that roots can “air-prune” when watered from above, given that they are not sitting in water below. Conversely, keeping the tray 1/3 approx. full of water allows it to act as a watering tray, should you prefer that method. When watering from below, capillary style, fill the tray just enough that the base of each cell is in water. I don't use these in my greenhouse. They are excellent for windowsill use - save mess, and water much less frequently. Then you can speed growth by using the clear lids I show you. https://containerwise.co.uk/product/c...
