The 80-Year War Between Two Brothers

Eighty years. That is how long it took two gods to settle who would rule Egypt after one of them murdered the other's father. Not eighty days of war. Eighty years of courtroom arguments, physical combat, and magical trickery, fought in front of a divine tribunal that kept finding reasons not to decide. The story of Horus and Set is not a story about good defeating evil. It is a story about what it actually costs to restore order after someone has shattered it. In this episode of Gods and Empires, we cover the full conflict between Horus and Set from beginning to verdict. We explore why the Ennead could not rule in Horus's favour even when the law was clearly on his side, how Isis tricked Set into condemning himself with his own words, the boat race that Set lost and the eye that Horus lost in return, the letter sent to the underworld that finally broke the deadlock, the threat that Osiris made from the land of the dead that no living god could ignore, and why Set was not destroyed after the verdict but given the one job in the cosmos that only he could do. If you watched Season One Episode Four, you already know how the murder happened. This episode picks up where that story ended and takes it to the verdict that built a civilization.
