Why Michael J. Fox Refused to Return for Teen Wolf
Why did Michael J. Fox refuse to return for Teen Wolf? The 1985 hit helped establish him as a movie star, but he had no desire to put the werewolf makeup back on. Discover the story behind his decision and the sequel that went ahead without him.
In August 1985, Back to the Future and Teen Wolf occupied the number one and number two spots at the domestic box office on the same weekend. Fox was the face of both films. One role became a trilogy; the other remained a single chapter in his career. What made those two experiences so different?
This video follows the making of Teen Wolf, Fox's experience as Scott Howard, and the practical demands behind a transformation that looked effortless on screen. For the audience, the wolf meant basketball skills, confidence, and a memorable comedy. For the performers, it also meant makeup preparation, physical restrictions, and a working day inside the finished illusion.
We look at why Fox accepted the original movie while working on Family Ties, when a break in production created an opportunity for a short film shoot. Before he knew what Marty McFly would mean for his career, a chance to lead a feature film had a different value. His later recollections help explain the distance between accepting that first opportunity and choosing whether to repeat it.
The werewolf was a team effort. Basketball double Jeff Glosser supplied athletic action, while Fox gave Scott the reactions and personality that held the character together. AFI's historical account cites a contemporary report describing three and a half hours of makeup for the basketball double. That detail belongs to the double's preparation; it should not automatically become a claim about Fox's exact daily schedule.
Fox's memoir Future Boy also recalls an uncomfortable promotional request involving a chocolate bar while he was in costume. We examine that memory alongside the filmmaking work, without turning one exchange into an invented feud. A movie can become a favorite for viewers while leaving its star with very different memories of the job.
The timeline matters. Teen Wolf was filmed before Back to the Future, but Back to the Future reached theaters first. Fox's arrival as Marty McFly changed the context in which audiences met Scott Howard. We follow that release history and the original film's box office performance, including why its success made a sequel commercially understandable.
When Teen Wolf Too arrived in 1987, Jason Bateman played Todd Howard, Scott's cousin, in a college story built around boxing. James Hampton and Mark Holton returned, but Fox did not. His reported explanation focused on the makeup application and removal. We compare the two films' domestic results while recognizing that a new lead, a new setting, and a changed story all affected what audiences were offered.
We also separate the original comedy films from the later Teen Wolf television adaptations. MTV's supernatural drama and its 2023 continuation belong to another version of the franchise. Their existence does not establish that Fox was repeatedly invited back or that he rejected every later project carrying the name.
