Nothing Stays the Same — The Columbian Exchange
One ocean connected two worlds—and nothing stayed the same.
Nothing Stays the Same explores the Columbian Exchange, the enormous movement of plants, animals, diseases, people, and ideas between the Americas, Europe, Africa, and eventually much of the wider world after sustained Atlantic contact.
Foods such as corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cacao, and peppers traveled from the Americas. Horses, cattle, pigs, wheat, sugarcane, and other plants and animals crossed in the other direction.
Some exchanges transformed diets and societies.
Others were catastrophic.
Diseases such as smallpox and measles devastated Indigenous populations that lacked previous exposure to them. The growing Atlantic system would also become connected to the forced movement and enslavement of millions of Africans.
The Columbian Exchange connected distant parts of the world more closely than ever before—but its consequences were not experienced equally.
