Quantum computing isn't a distant, futuristic concept. It's arriving faster than most people expect. In this episode of Spotlight, host David Dunmoyer sits down with Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, America's leading pure-play quantum computing company, to break down what quantum technology actually means for Texas and the nation.
De Masi explains the difference between classical computing (CPUs, GPUs) and quantum processing units (QPUs), how quantum computers can solve problems that would take classical machines centuries to crack, and why industries from energy and water management to healthcare and defense stand to be transformed. The conversation also dives into "Q-Day," the point at which quantum computers could break current encryption standards, and what that means for national security, banking, and critical infrastructure.
De Masi and Dunmoyer discuss the Texas Quantum Initiative, the state's existing advantages (energy, semiconductors, defense, research universities), and what policymakers could consider as they look at workforce development, infrastructure security, and Texas's position in the emerging quantum economy.
