Austin is the most American race on the calendar, and race week is one of the most expensive weeks of the year to be in Texas - perfect for F1 Billionaires. A $260 downtown room runs three to six times higher. The best-placed rooms go to eight. Last year the average Airbnb went from $423 the week before to $780 on race weekend — up 84% in seven days.
And yet the thing Austin is best at costs nothing to queue for.
Austin holds seven Michelin stars. Three of them went to barbecue joints. The billionaire and the backpacker stand in the same line for hours for brisket served on butcher paper. In Singapore a three-star chef cooks above the pit lane. In Austin, three of the seven stars are eaten with your hands.
This is our guide to the weekend around the race.
Where the drivers actually sleep — three towers downtown, 15 miles from the circuit, and why a hotel entrance at 7am is the best place in Texas to see one up close. The Driskill, opened 1886 by a cattle baron. The Commodore Perry estate, the one address where team owners stay out of sight.
How the money moves. Three private terminals at Austin-Bergstrom, one of which handles up to 70 aircraft across the weekend, and a departure slot system that opens on a 72-hour rolling window — because when the flag falls on Sunday, dozens of jets want the same runway at once, all heading for Mexico City.
Plus: Maroon 5 Friday, Post Malone Saturday, Alesso after the race — all included with a race ticket. Liam Lawson's own country gig on East 6th on Thursday night. A million and a half bats leaving the Congress Avenue Bridge. And Kimi Antonelli, 102 points clear, 20 years old, who could leave Texas as the youngest world champion in the history of the sport — and the first Italian since 1953.
