Short pieces of Native American DNA, closest to a people in Colombia, sit inside the genomes of islanders in eastern Polynesia. The genetic clock dates the mixing to around 1150 CE on Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas. That is more than 300 years before Columbus, and close to when Polynesians themselves were settling those islands. How did it get there, and who sailed?
We follow the evidence: 807 people from 17 island populations and 15 Native American groups (Ioannidis et al., Nature 2020); the first ancient genomes of Lapita settlers from Vanuatu and Tonga (Skoglund et al., Nature 2016); ancestry turnover in Vanuatu while the languages stayed the same (Posth et al. 2018; Lipson et al. 2018); 1,434 re-checked radiocarbon dates (Wilmshurst et al., PNAS 2011); the island-by-island settlement route rebuilt from 430 genomes (Ioannidis et al., Nature 2021); and 15 ancient Rapanui genomes showing no population crash and about 10% Native American ancestry from around 1250–1430 CE (Moreno-Mayar et al., Nature 2024).
Honest note: the contact dates are estimates from genetic models, the 2020 and 2024 studies disagree on timing, and DNA cannot tell us who made the voyage. Polynesians and Native Americans met before Columbus. How they met is still open.
Did Polynesians sail to the Americas and back, or was someone already waiting on that beach? Tell us in the comments.
