In 1962, a fire started in the dump of a small Pennsylvania town. Government engineers figured they could dig it out for about $30,000. More than sixty years later it is still burning, and the town of Centralia is almost gone.
We follow the government's own paper trail: a 1962 newspaper warning, the U.S. Bureau of Mines case study, and Pennsylvania's own records. You'll see why every attempt stopped halfway, how the bill grew to $663 million, what happened to the people who lived there, and who most likely lit the fire.
