What does it actually take to grow a business beyond you and eventually beyond Jamaica?
Djuvane Browne, Co-Founder and CEO of One Great Studio (1GS), shares how his journey from freelancer evolved into building a publicly listed creative company with more than 70 team members working across Jamaica, the Caribbean and international markets.
But the growth didn’t come from creative talent alone.
In this episode of Koined Insights, Djuvane breaks down the decisions and systems that helped 1GS scale: recognizing when he had reached the limits of working alone, bringing the right people into the business, giving up equity to grow, building stronger operations and eventually acquiring a company twice the size of their own.
He also explains what Jamaican and Caribbean businesses need to consider when expanding internationally, why finding a niche can make you more competitive in a market like the US, and why trying to offer everything can actually weaken a creative agency.
We also get into one of the harder lessons of entrepreneurship: knowing when to stop fighting the market. As Djuvane explains, there’s a difference between having an idea and having something people actually want to buy.
In this episode:
• Why being talented at your craft isn’t enough to build a strong business
• How Djuvane went from freelancer to building One Great Studio
• Why giving up equity helped 1GS grow
• How a smaller company can position itself to acquire a larger one
• What it takes to expand a Jamaican business into international markets
• Why niching down can make your business more competitive
• The problem with trying to be a “full-service” agency
• Why strong operations can become a competitive advantage
• How to build and retain a team that clients trust
• Why founders need to listen when the market isn’t buying
• Djuvane’s perspective on faith, profitability and stewardship in business
