Saparu (Gai Jatra) 2083 | Basantapur Kathmandu | Nepal’s Festival of Life & Remembrance
Saparu, also known as Gai Jatra (गाईजात्रा), is one of the most unique and meaningful festivals celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley. It is a festival of remembrance, where families honor loved ones who passed away during the past year, while the streets come alive with traditional processions, music, costumes, dance, humor, and satire.
In this video, we begin our journey around the Basantapur area of Kathmandu, where the streets fill with people, traditional performances, processions, and the vibrant atmosphere of Saparu.
But Gai Jatra is much more than a colorful street festival.
According to the popular legend, King Pratap Malla started the tradition after the death of his son deeply affected the queen. To show her that death is a part of every family’s life, the king asked families who had lost loved ones to join a procession. He also encouraged people to use humor and performances to bring happiness back to the grieving queen.
That tradition continues today in different forms.
The cow, or its symbolic representation, is an important part of the procession and is traditionally believed to help guide the departed soul toward the afterlife. At the same time, Saparu creates a special space where people can express grief, remember their loved ones, and celebrate life together.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Gai Jatra is its satire and humor. For generations, people have used this festival to express social and political criticism through jokes, performances, costumes, songs, and street acts. In this way, sadness and laughter exist together during the festival.
After exploring Basantapur, our journey continues toward Panga and Kirtipur, where we experience more local traditions and celebrations of Saparu.
👉 The Panga & Kirtipur part will be covered in the NEXT VIDEO, so make sure to watch that one too!
Come along with us and experience Saparu 2083 through the streets of Kathmandu Valley, its people, traditions, emotions, music, and timeless culture.
🙏 Thank you for watching and supporting our journey through Nepal's living heritage.
