This major rail project is between Carnamah and Mingenew, on the MR Line from Millendon Junction to Narngulu. Aurizon's Narngulu West and East Depots are located on the eastern outskirts of Geraldton City. ARC Infrastructure has an agreement with the WA State Government to deliver rail upgrades to the Midland Railway. Between Carnamah and Mingenew, as part of the Agricultural Supply Chain (ASCI) Improvements Programme. Both the State and Federal Governments have agreed to fund $45 million to the project. With $22 million contribution from ARC Infrastructure. Timber and steel sleepers being replaced with concrete sleepers, along approximately 77kms of track. And replacement of 96kms of rail with minimum 41kg rail. This rail upgrade will increase the 16 Tonne Axle Load (TAL) to 19 TAL limit. ARC Infrastructure and CBH Group have combined in an agreement programme. That will see large sections of the track closed for the duration of the Rail Upgrade Project. A June - July shutdown was previously mentioned. But another report received, was that it will be possibly be extended until September. The time overlap can be expected, given that it's a huge scope of this rail upgrade project. Which also included Civil engineering works associated with new replacement of new concrete culverts, etc. CBH Group is the sole customer on the MR Line, with it's grain trains, crewed by Aurizon. The only other movements, are Aurizon locomotive transfers between their Forrestfield Depot and Narngulu. Also wagon allocation as occasional moves. And ARC Infrastructure work trains when needed. Which are contracted out to Watco. Grain trains are still operating on the MR line. They are loading out of CBH Mingenew site, for the Geraldton Port CBH Grain Terminal. And out of CBH Moora site, to CBH Kwinana Grain Terminal. Video taken Sunday 25th July 2026
