He started every morning the same way. One cup — and he felt 100%. But caffeine doesn't give you energy. It hides how tired you are. Every hour you're awake, your brain builds up a chemical called adenosine — the "tired" signal. Caffeine fits into the same receptors and blocks that signal for a while. The tiredness doesn't disappear. It keeps piling up in the background… and when the caffeine wears off, it all hits at once. What the science says: • Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors — it masks fatigue, it doesn't remove it. • On average, it takes about 5 hours for half of the caffeine to leave your body (it varies a lot from person to person). • Caffeine even 6 hours before bed can noticeably disrupt sleep (Drake et al., 2013). • With daily use the brain adapts, so the same cup starts doing less. • Cutting back can bring headaches and fatigue for the first few days — then it gets easier. Tip: try having your last cup at least 6–8 hours before bed. 0:00 Every morning, the same 0:14 "Not today, buddy" 0:24 What caffeine really does 0:34 The afternoon crash 0:48 Too tired, too wired 1:07 Day 1 1:24 Day 14 1:41 The truth about caffeine How many cups did you need today?
