Man in a Lifted Box: What Will the Weighing Machine Show? | Apparent Weight | JEE Physics
In this video, Himanshu Sir solves an interesting JEE Physics mechanics problem involving a man standing on a weighing machine inside a box suspended by a pulley.
The question combines Newton's Laws of Motion, tension, apparent weight and equilibrium in a single problem.
📌 QUESTION DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO:
A man of mass m = 80 kg is standing on a light weighing machine kept in a box of mass M = 40 kg. The box is hanging from a pulley fixed to the ceiling through a light cord, the other end of which is held by the man himself.
(a) If the man manages to keep the box at rest, what is the weight shown by the machine?
(b) What force should he apply on the cord to get his correct weight on the machine?
Take g = 10 m/s².
📚 CONCEPTS COVERED:
Apparent weight
Normal reaction
Tension in a pulley system
Newton's laws of motion
Free body diagrams
Equilibrium
Weight measured by a weighing machine
Pulley problems
Mechanics for JEE
JEE Physics problem solving
This is an important conceptual problem because the man himself is holding the rope connected to the box, so the tension force affects both the man and the box.
Watch the complete solution carefully and understand how to apply FBDs and Newton's laws instead of guessing the answer.
If you're preparing for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, MH-CET or other competitive exams, make sure you practice these types of conceptual mechanics questions regularly.
