Drumheller: "Hoodoos" Drumheller Alberta(AB) Canada - Thursday 8th September 2026. The Hoodoos, near Drumheller in Alberta's badlands, are a cluster of mushroom-shaped sandstone columns topped by harder caprocks and known as one of the province's most recognizable geological formations. Spread across about 11 hectares between Drumheller and East Coulee, roughly 10 columns stand one to three meters tall and expose layered Cretaceous deposits formed 70 to 75 million years ago, with soft Bearpaw Formation shale below and Horseshoe Canyon sandstones above, and the caprocks contain about 40 percent calcite which makes them more resistant to erosion. The site was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 2001, and visitors view the formations from short trails and overlooks as part of exploring the Drumheller badlands.
