Driving from Ceiba to Playa Guayanes in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico

After exploring the beaches of Roosevelt Roads in Ceiba, we are going to drive south along the coast in search of another beach, Playa Guayanes in Yabucoa. Our route today is going to take us south along Puerto Rico Highway 53 which is a main tollway that is parallel to Puerto Rico Highway 3. Running from Fajardo to Salinas, it borders the entire eastern and southeastern coasts of Puerto Rico. Our drive today will take us through some fertile valley areas that produces most of the island's plantain and bananas. This area was also once known for it sugar production. Off in the distance there is the southern part of El Yunque National Forest. If you plan to visit El Yunque, and you should, you'll want to use the northern entrance to the Forest because the southern entryway has been closed for years and you can only get a short distance into the Forest. Interstate highways and expressways in Puerto Rico connect all areas of the island and make it pretty easy to get to any area of the island quickly. The expressways are tollways whose funding are collected by a system of tolls. Most tollbooths accept AutoExpreso, an electronic toll collection system, to avoid traffic congestion and allow you to drive through without stopping. If you rent a car in Puerto Rico, the EutoExpreso pass is generally included. Puerto Rico's balmy south coast is known as the Porta Caribe ("gateway to the Caribbean") and is the only part of Puerto Rico that faces the Caribbean Sea. The waves are calmer here and the air drier than elsewhere on the island. Because there are far fewer beaches means there will be fewer visitors in this area. Guayanés beach has calm waves and wide areas of sand, but few visitors today. Most of the beaches on this south side of the island are not as groomed as those in other parts of the island.
