The Fearless Story of Pearl Witherington — 1,500 Fighters Under Her Command

In 2006, at a retirement home in the Loire Valley, a 92-year-old woman was handed a small pair of cloth wings by an RAF officer. She had waited more than sixty years for them. She was already a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and held France's Legion of Honour — and once sent a royal honour back to the British government with a reply that left no doubt what she thought of it. But she said these plain little wings meant more than all the rest. Her name was Pearl Witherington. Within a year of parachuting into occupied France, roughly 1,500 armed fighters answered to her, and the enemy offered a million francs for her capture.
