The letters Roman soldiers left behind nearly 2000 years ago

What did Roman soldiers write when they were far from home? This documentary explores the letters they left behind nearly 2,000 years ago, and what those messages reveal about life in the Roman army. History usually remembers Roman soldiers through battles, campaigns, and emperors. Their own letters offer something different: a closer look at daily routines, supplies, friendships, worries, and the ordinary concerns of people living on the edge of an empire. By following these surviving messages, we explore how soldiers lived on the frontier, how they communicated across long distances, and why such everyday writing is so valuable to historians and archaeologists. After watching, you will have a clearer picture of Roman military life from the soldiers’ own perspective, and of how written records help us understand the people behind the legions.
