Just before 2 a.m. on February 15, 2021, the Texas power grid was minutes from collapse, and it all came down to one number: 60 hertz. The grid stores very little electricity, so supply has to match demand every instant, and frequency is how operators keep score. This video explains how generators spin in lockstep, the layers of defense that catch a sudden loss, why rolling blackouts are the last resort, and how close Texas came.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
The frequency curve in "Layers of defense" and the cascade in "The last resort" are illustrative, not measurements. The three-grid map is a schematic. 3,600 rpm applies to two-pole generators, the common design for large steam turbines. ERCOT's slides put the dip below 59.4 Hz near 1:51 a.m. and UT Austin puts the 59.302 Hz low near 1:55 a.m. Batteries and pumped hydro do store power, but still little next to total generation.
