The VQ Models 'DHC 2 Beaver' features a 1.6 m wingspan, an E flite 870 KV electric brushless motor, 13 x 4 propeller, 4S 6400 mAh LiPo and a fly weight of approximately 2.5 kg. Fitted with two floats, this model is set up for water flying. Flight Review: This was a new location for testing the Beaver, with a beautiful sunset over the trees creating a glistening reflection across the water that looked fantastic from the flight line. I started by taxiing out and getting myself lined up for the first takeoff. Once airborne, I flew a few circuits and passes to explore the area, including flying over the obstacles on the ground. I also managed a landing directly into a patch of sunlight glistening on the water, which made for a great highlight. I then tried a fast taxi and takeoff, which is an important part of seaplane flying. However, I struggled to get the Beaver airborne because turning during the fast taxi seemed to take away too much momentum. The lesson was pretty clear: on takeoff, I need to keep the Beaver as straight as possible and allow it to build speed before lifting off. The next highlight was a first for me: my first ever water touch and go. I brought the Beaver in on a landing approach towards the water, kept the throttle up as I touched down, allowed it to taxi in a straight line and then accelerated straight back into the air. It was a really satisfying manoeuvre and something I had specifically wanted to try with the Beaver. For the final landing, I came in a little too long and almost ran out of room on the water, with the Beaver getting close to tipping as it slowed down. Along with the circuits, low passes, water landing and fast taxi, it made for a great session and gave me some valuable experience with seaplane manoeuvres. Each flight is teaching me a little more about managing speed, direction and momentum on the water.
