Val Bodengo

The Val Bodengo Canyon, located in the Lombardy region, is one of the most spectacular alpine canyons in Europe. For thousands of years, the rushing waters of the Bodengo torrent have shaped the rocks, giving rise to a breathtaking landscape of vertical cliffs, swirling waterfalls, and natural pools filled with deep green water. Val Bodengo is particularly famous among canyoning enthusiasts, being considered one of the finest routes in Europe. The descent includes cliff jumps, natural water slides, abseiling (rappelling) down waterfalls, swimming, and crossing fast-flowing streams. At the same time, the valley offers scenic alpine hiking trails, ideal for those who prefer to admire the canyon without getting into the water. The full descent of all three sections spans approximately 4.5 km, with a significant vertical drop of around 700 meters. To reach the parking lot at the canyon exit 😊, we had to complete an average of 45 rappels (distinct rope descents over various obstacles). I explored this canyon together with John and Ionel in August 2023, during the 19th International Canyoning Meeting organized by the Italian Canyoning Association. The video captures only the first section and will give you an idea of the beauty and complexity of the Val Bodengo Canyon. It is also an invitation to explore whenever you wish to move beyond recreational-level canyoning.
