Episode 1351 On Boxing Day, Minnie (Margot Bryant) remains furious about Ena’s (Violet Carson) eviction and believes Ernie (Stephen Hancock) bears more responsibility than Emily (Eileen Derbyshire). Ena plays her harmonium loudly to provoke the Bishops next door, although they refuse to respond. Ernie is increasingly angry that the residents have accepted Ena’s version of events without hearing the committee’s reasons. Rita (Barbara Knox) is woken up by customers demanding that The Kabin open. After dealing with complaints and returns, she gives up trying to remain closed. Ena shows Minnie a letter from Henry Foster (Norman Shelley), who has moved into a bungalow in St Annes and wants her to become his housekeeper. Jerry (Graham Haberfield) visits Ena with a Christmas gift and assures her that the residents support her. Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) suggests holding a staff party at the yard. Annie (Doris Speed) asks Len (Peter Adamson) to intervene in Ena’s eviction, but he explains that neither he nor the council has authority over the Community Centre committee. Annie, Len and Jerry nevertheless visit No.3 to confront the Bishops. Annie condemns Ernie for allowing an elderly woman to be driven from her home at Christmas but Ernie angrily calls them hypocrites, arguing that they rarely help with the Community Centre but are eager to pass judgement when something goes wrong. When Annie declares that he and Emily no longer have a friend in the Street, Emily becomes hysterical and locks herself in the bathroom. After the others leave, Len privately tells Ernie that he does not blame him for what happened. Ray (Neville Buswell) and Deirdre find themselves kissing passionately under the mistletoe while preparing for the party. The Bishops offer to resign from the committee unless Ena is allowed to return to the flat but Ena refuses to go back merely as a resident and insists that she must also be reinstated in her job, preserving her dignity by leaving only when she chooses. Ray, Len, Jerry, Deirdre, Rita and Mavis (Thelma Barlow) have the party at the yard. Jerry thanks Mavis for encouraging him when the business appeared doomed and tells her that he now hopes to become the driving force behind its expansion. Bet (Julie Goodyear), Stan (Bernard Youens) and Hilda (Jean Alexander) gatecrash the celebration after discovering that glasses have been taken from the Rovers. Rita is confident that Len will propose to her in 1974 so bets Mavis £1 that she will marry Len before Jerry even proposes to her.
