On an April night in 1871, a free Black farmer named Silas Weston kept a promise the mountains warned him not to keep, and three men climbed the ridge to his cabin in Morgan Township, North Carolina to stop him from speaking.
This is the true story of the Weston family and the case that pulled a Reconstruction-era Rutherford County community out of its silence. It follows the stolen brandy that crossed the McDowell County line, the witness who refused to look away, the wounded survivor who crawled a mile in the dark carrying three names, and the trial, appeal, and reckoning that reached all the way to the Supreme Court of North Carolina in State versus Adair. What became of Columbus and Govan Adair, of Martin Baynard, and of the family they tried to erase closes a wrong that took a century and a half to answer.
Researched from court records, contemporary newspapers, and historical archives. Archival images are public domain or used for historical commentary; where no photograph survives, imagery is illustrative.
