Few pirate stories end as strangely as that of Laurens de Graaf, a Dutch master gunner whose career took him from the gun decks of Spanish galleons to the swamps of French Louisiana. ⚓
In this video, we uncover the story of Laurens de Graaf, the Dutch buccaneer of the 1680s whom the Spanish called Lorencillo, a man who may have begun life as a captive aboard their ships and turned on Spain with a professional's grudge. His story shows how one skilled outsider could humble the richest empire in the Americas.
⚓ It begins in obscurity. Born around 1653, most likely in Dordrecht, he may have spent his youth put to work aboard Spanish galleons, possibly as a gunner. Around 1680 he steps into the record among the buccaneers of Tortuga, Petit-Goâve and Port Royal, already counted among the finest gunners in the Caribbean.
In 1682 he captured a Spanish warship of twenty-four to twenty-eight guns and made her his flagship, and when Spain sent ships to destroy him near Puerto Rico, he captured one of those as well. In May 1683 he joined Nicolas van Hoorn and the Sieur de Grammont to take Veracruz by deception, ransom its people and sail out past a Spanish treasure fleet with a haul estimated in the millions of pieces of eight.
🌊 But life as a pirate was never secure. The plunder split the victors: de Graaf wounded van Hoorn in a duel, and the cut turned to gangrene and killed him. Spain put a price on Lorencillo's head and sent the Armada de Barlovento after him, and off Campeche in 1685 the Windward Fleet finally cornered him, yet he fought a running battle through the shallows and got away again.
🔥 He married Anne Dieu-le-Veut, the woman who had once challenged him to a duel, took service with France in Saint-Domingue, helped defend the colony in 1695, and ended his days as a pilot with Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's expedition to plant French Louisiana, dying around 1704, most likely in the Gulf colony he had helped to build.
What made a Dutchman more frightening to Spain than Drake or Morgan? How did a few buccaneer crews walk out of one of the richest cities in the New World past a superior Spanish fleet? And why did the most feared raider of the Caribbean end his life as a quiet colonist on the Gulf coast?
☠️ From Spanish chains to the founding of Louisiana, Laurens de Graaf's story offers a dark look into the buccaneer brotherhood of the Caribbean and the price Spain paid for its silver.
