One day, Shri Krishna sent Uddhava to Vrindavan with a message for Nanda Baba, Yashoda Maiya, and the Gopis who were suffering from separation from Krishna. Uddhava went to Vrindavan thinking that he would explain spiritual knowledge to the Gopis and teach them how to overcome their sorrow. But when he witnessed the depth of the Gopis’ unconditional love and devotion for Shri Krishna, something changed within him. The Gopis did not want anything from Krishna. They did not love Him for wealth, status, reward, or even liberation. Their hearts were completely devoted to Krishna. Uddhava gradually realized that spiritual knowledge and intellectual understanding alone could not fully explain the depth of such divine love. According to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Uddhava expressed his desire to become a plant, creeper, or blade of grass in Vrindavan so that he could receive the dust of the Gopis’ feet. The great scholar who had come to teach the Gopis ultimately became a humble student of their devotion. But Uddhava’s journey did not end there. Later, as Shri Krishna’s earthly pastimes approached their conclusion, Krishna gave Uddhava profound spiritual teachings concerning the soul, devotion, detachment, mind, wisdom, and the nature of life. These teachings are traditionally known as the Uddhava Gita.
