1938 Harris Steamcar — 💨 The Wildest Steam-Powered Car of the 1930s

What if gasoline wasn't supposed to win? The 1938 Harris Steamcar was a one-off American prototype created by Detroit steam engineer H. R. Harris, a man who believed steam power still had a future on American roads. Instead of simply copying the steam automobiles of the past, Harris attempted to completely rethink the concept. The result was an extraordinary streamlined steam-powered automobile that looked more like a futuristic science-fiction machine than a conventional 1930s sedan. Its long aerodynamic body, enclosed front sections, unusual proportions and rear-mounted steam power unit made it unlike almost anything else built in America during the period. The surviving car is powered by a Stanley Steamer unit rated at 20 horsepower, according to Lane Motor Museum, with a direct-drive system and a front-mounted condenser. The museum lists a projected top speed of approximately 40 mph. Some historical sources give different horsepower figures, so the museum's specification is the safer figure to use. The Harris was enormous, weighing approximately 5,000 pounds and measuring close to 20 feet long according to historical estimates. Inside was an unusual luxury-style cabin with individual front seats and a large rear sofa. Even the storage solutions were bizarre: the spare tire was reportedly hidden inside one rear armrest while the fuel tank occupied the other. But perhaps the biggest mystery is whether the completed car ever actually ran under its own power. The Harris Steamcar reportedly remained with the Harris family for decades before changing hands several times. Its steam machinery was eventually removed by one owner, and the body remained stored for years. Today, the surviving prototype is preserved by Lane Motor Museum, but important details about its original operation remain uncertain.
