In this Dharma talk, given on the fourth day of the 7-Day Fall Retreat on Sept. 10, 2026, at the Zen Life and Meditation Center (ZLMC), Rev. Diane Myogetsu Bejcek examines Case 19 of the Gateless Gate (Mumonkan). In that case, Master Nansen instructs Joshu that "Ordinary Mind is the Way." Challenging cultural fixations on seeking extraordinary, transcendent experiences or treating practice as an ambitious self-improvement project, Myogetsu highlights that awakening is already fully present in routine, daily moments. Drawing on insights from Dogen and Shantideva, she emphasizes the need for iron discipline, vigilant attention, and wholehearted presence in both joy and mundane tasks. There are several key teachings in this talk:
Awakening in the Mundane: Spiritual realization is not found in rare mystical states on mountaintops, but in the ordinary activities of daily living when approached without grasping or aversion.
Effortless Action and Attention: Turning toward the Way as an object of desire causes it to slip away; true meditation involves undivided, vigilant presence to whatever arises here and now.
Taming the Mind Through Discipline: Drawing on Shantideva’s metaphor of tethering the wild elephant of the mind with the rope of mindfulness, rigorous presence frees us from compulsive, conditioned reflexes.
