"You follow the Prophet ﷺ in your prayer. You follow him in your fasting. But when it comes to purifying your soul, you follow a sheikh, a dream, a philosophy, or a strange ritual. And then you wonder why it doesn't work."
In this foundational lecture, Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble explains the only correct path to tazkiyah (purification of the soul) – the path of the Prophets. He warns against taking purification from dreams, stories, Sufi imaginations, or personal opinions, and emphasizes that the Prophet ﷺ is the scale by which we measure everything – our manners, our actions, and even our spiritual growth.
He also draws a crucial principle from the Quran: Allah tests us to see which of us is "best" in deeds, not "most" in deeds. Quality matters more than quantity.
In this video, you will learn:
The Prophetic Path to Purification: Allah sent the Prophets to purify the souls of this Ummah. They are the doctors of the hearts. There is no way to purify your soul except through them – and by submitting completely to what they came with.
The Two Mistakes People Make:
1. Seeking tazkiyah from sources other than the Quran and Sunnah – dreams, hikayat, personal experiences, and strange rituals.
2. Leaving tazkiyah entirely because they don't believe it is part of the Sunnah.
The Prophet ﷺ is the Scale (Mizan al-Akbar): Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah said: "Rasulullah ﷺ is the scale. Whatever agrees with what he did is the truth – and whatever goes against what he did is falsehood."
The Danger of Imaginary Paths: Ibn al-Qayyim said that anyone who gives you something not based on the chains of narration is giving you philosophy, personal opinion, or imagination. There is no way to Allah and Jannah except through the Quran and the Sunnah. Every other road is the path to Jahannam.
Quality Over Quantity: Allah says: "He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds" – not "most" in deeds. Your 1,000 dhikr count for nothing if they are not done with sincerity and according to the Sunnah. A deed is only accepted if it is sincere (for Allah) and correct (according to the Sunnah).
This lecture is essential for anyone seeking to purify their soul. Follow the prophetic path – and nothing else.
