There are many wonderful fanfics about Kirk and Spock's break-up and their subsequent reunion during the V'ger incident. In those stories, Spock usually runs away to Gol because he doesn't think he's able to respond to Kirk's overflowing love without losing his inner balance. And well, if you ask me, that's a far more believable scenario than the one I created here: in this one, Kirk uncharacteristically put his ship (and some other ladies) before his relationship with Spock...
