Your cat’s tail is constantly communicating — but many of its signals are surprisingly easy to misread. A fast swish, a tail held straight up, a puffed “bottlebrush,” a curl at the tip or one slow movement while your cat rests beside you can all mean very different things. In this video, we break down the language of your cat’s tail layer by layer and look at what these common movements may actually be telling you. You’ll learn why a wagging tail doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing in cats as it does in dogs, what rapid swishing and thumping can signal, why cats raise their tails when approaching someone they trust, and what may be happening when the tail suddenly becomes puffed. We’ll also look at the famous question-mark tail, the role the tail plays in balance and communication, and some physical changes that shouldn’t simply be dismissed as normal behavior. And then there’s one of the quietest signals of all: the slow, gentle movement of the tail when a cat feels settled beside someone. Once you start noticing these small differences, you may realize your cat has been “talking” to you far more often than you thought. 🐱 What does your cat usually do with their tail?
