Angh (Konyak for Chief) is set in Nagaland in the 1960s. Christianity has arrived, in the form of a foreign missionary. A remote tribe is now being offered a new faith, and with it comes a very different life with its own customs. As a tribal leader tries to fight this new tide, and realises he is losing, desperation sets in. The film strives to be honest and seeks a neutral perspective, says writer-director Theja Rio, 31, though it does show “how the arrival of one thing is responsible for the death of another.” This debute feature by Rio just won in the prestigious Platform section (for best feature in a non-English language) at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Starting this year, the winner of the Platform Prize is automatically eligible for the Best International Feature Oscar. So that's where it will seek to go next. Check out a clip from the film.
