The Well-Tempered Clavier (Das wohltemperierte Clavier) is one of Bach’s most important keyboard works. Bach described the collection as being intended for the benefit and practice of young musicians, while also providing enjoyment for more experienced players. The title Well-Tempered Clavier refers to a keyboard tuning system in which the different keys can be used effectively across the tonal spectrum. It should not simply be equated with modern 12-tone equal temperament; the exact temperament Bach intended remains a subject of historical and musicological discussion.
