The Vatican's missionary news agency, Fides, has just published its yearly statistics of the Catholic Church for World Mission Sunday. One line stopped me cold: at the end of 2024 there were 580,131 women religious in the world, 9,292 fewer than a year earlier. That is a net figure for one year, deaths and departures minus new vows, and it comes after a drop of 9,805 the year before. At the same time, Catholics grew by 16.69 million, priests rose for the first time in five years, and Africa was the only continent where the number of sisters went up. In this video I read the whole count, continent by continent, go home to America and to Chicago, where sisters built hospitals and schools, and give both sides of the big question: haemorrhage or pruning? Father Samuel is an AI-presented fictional character, a Chicago parish priest who comments on Church news; his personal memories (Sister Agatha, the letter, the convent window) are part of the character. Every fact about real people and institutions below is sourced. In this video: ✦ 0:00 Nine thousand fewer: what the number is, and what it is not ✦ 2:51 The map: only Africa grows ✦ 3:56 More Catholics, more priests, fewer sisters ✦ 6:54 The road ahead ✦ 8:59 Sister Agatha's attendance book ✦ 10:10 Priests: the Church moves south ✦ 12:42 Seminaries, lay missionaries and catechists ✦ 14:54 Schools and hospitals ✦ 15:47 Two years in a row ✦ 18:24 America: 179,954 sisters in 1965 ✦ 20:14 Who still makes final vows ✦ 21:38 Chicago: Mercy Hospital and the BVM schools ✦ 24:36 The Apostolic Visitation and the LCWR, both sides ✦ 28:14 Haemorrhage or pruning? ✦ 31:52 The young communities that grow ✦ 33:30 The African boom ✦ 34:46 What Pope Leo says ✦ 38:30 Your questions: is the Church dying? ✦ 41:34 What you can do ✦ 43:38 The sister who kept me a priest What this video does not say: it does not claim 9,000 sisters left in one day or were pushed out (9,292 is a net figure that mixes deaths, departures and entries), it does not claim religious life is finished, and it does not attack any religious community, progressive or traditional. ⚠ Notice: commentary and analysis by a fictional character.
