In August 1975, China’s Banqiao Dam faced one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. Record-breaking rainfall from Typhoon Nina overwhelmed the reservoir, causing the dam to collapse and triggering a massive chain reaction that destroyed dozens of other dams.
The resulting floods, famine, and disease caused an estimated 230,000 deaths. For decades, the disaster remained largely hidden from the world.
This is the story of the Banqiao Dam disaster — one of history’s most devastating and forgotten catastrophes.
